Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 33

Jorge Soler pulls the Daily Double on Wednesday, appearing on the Goat podium in both halves of the doubleheader and taking the top step in the nightcap.

Yes, he did call that one strike three. And yes, it was a little inside.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - John Lackey (.265).  Got everything except for the run support.
  • Hero - Kris Bryant (.127).  There's a fruit basket headed to Alexei Ramirez for dropping Bryant's popup in the eighth; if he makes that catch, Bryant probably finishes out of the top three.
  • Sidekick - Javier Baez (.077).  The impact of a leadoff single in the ninth when you're down by a single run is pretty huge.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Jorge Soler (-.292).  So. Many. Strikeouts. It's his first Golden Sombrero in the major leagues, so he got that out of the way.
  • Goat - Ben Zobrist (-.200).  Couldn't come through in the ninth, hitting a comebacker to Fernando Rodney to end the game.
  • Kid - Dexter Fowler (-.148).  Found the final step with three strikeouts of his own and a lineout to center to end a potential threat in the fifth.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 33: Lackey works his way back to even ground on the charts while Soler falls into the double-digit negatives.
