I decided to take the night off from watching baseball and spent it with my family. I have to do that every once in awhile if I want to still have a family.
Gerardo Concepcion was promoted to Triple-A Iowa. Miguel Mejia was sent down to Tennessee.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were deafened by the Nashville Sounds (Athletics), 7-2.
Michael Wagner started for the I-Cubs today and took the loss after he allowed three runs on five hits over four innings. He walked four and struck out two.
First baseman Dan Vogelbach connected for a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was his sixth home run of the year. Vogelbach was 2 for 3 with a walk and two RBI.
Center fielder Albert Almora was 2 for 4 and scored the other run. He has a nine-game hitting streak.
Miguel Montero caught six innings and went 0 for 3. After the game, he announced that he was ready to return to the majors.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were beaten by the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 5-4 in ten innings.
Tyler Skulina got off to a bad start today as he allowed home runs to the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the first inning. The final line on Skulina was four runs allowed on four hits over five innings. Skulina walked two and struck out five.
The Smokies scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to send the game into extras. But Josh Conway entered the game in the tenth inning and walked the bases loaded with one out. The winning run then scored on a ground ball to the shortstop. Conway struck out one.
Catcher David Freitas and right fielder Bijan Rademacher hit back-to-back doubles in that three-run rally in the ninth. Freitas was 1 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI in the ninth and Rademacher was 2 for 4 with the RBI.
Tennessee's first run came on a solo home run by left fielder Mark Zagunis in the fifth inning. It was Zagunis' second home run of the year. Zagunis was 1 for 3 with two walks.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans dashed the hopes of the Winston-Salem Dash (White Sox), 3-0.
It was a great start tonight for Trevor Clifton, who struck out ten and walked nobody in his first win of the season. Clifton pitched six innings and gave up just four hits.
James Farris got his sixth save. He pitched 1.1 innings and surrendered one hit. He walked one and struck out two.
Third baseman Jason Vosler was the big bat tonight. Vosler was 2 for 3 with a double and a solo home run in the second inning. It was his first home run of the season. Vosler scored twice.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs were shut out by the Lansing Lugnuts (Blue Jays), 5-0.
Starter Kyle Twomey pitched five innings and allowed five runs on five hits. One of the five runs was unearned. He walked two, hit two and struck out no one.
South Bend managed two hits tonight, both singles. P.J. Higgins and Donnie Dewees had the two hits.
