Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 35

The power display continued on Saturday, this time with Anthony Rizzo's go-ahead three-run homer taking the top step on the Hero podium in the Cubs' 8-2 win.

It's just your everyday run-of-the-mill 1-4-6-3.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Anthony Rizzo (.218).  He's well ahead of his career best for runs batted in to start a season; the most RBI he previously had through the first 35 games of a season was 26 in 2013.
  • Hero - Jake Arrieta (.139).  Probably could have made more of a run for the top spot if not for that fourth inning.  Ah, well... seven out of eight (innings) ain't bad.
  • Sidekick - Addison Russell (.110). As Al said on Friday:  Everybody digs the long ball.

THE THREE GOATS: The bump machine continues to roll as Arrieta's -.046 hitting is moved out.

  • Billy Goat - Jorge Soler (-.088).  From the Sad Trombone department:  Soler was the only player in the starting lineup to not reach base.
  • Goat - Dexter Fowler (-.020).  He did have two singles, one of which drove in a run, but the score was already 5-2 or 6-2 by the time he did it.
  • Kid - Javier Baez (-.004).  This is quickly becoming the tough-luck step; he's the seventh player so far this season to take the final step with a WPA that was better than -.010.  It took 105 games in 2015 to reach the same mark.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 35: Arrieta moves back to the top of the pack while Soler creeps a little closer to the cellar door.
