Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 36

New, 12 comments

The ninth inning in Sunday's game played a major role in determining who landed where on both podiums.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jon Lester (.158).  Obviously his fate wasn't determined by the events of the ninth inning as he wasn't a part of it.  His solid performance through six-plus was enough to keep him at the top of the Heroes despite giving up the game's only run at the time in the seventh.
  • Hero - Jason Heyward (.147).  He was on the road to the Goat podium until he hit his single in the ninth.  The stolen base was just bonus points.
  • Sidekick - Dexter Fowler (.100).  His double in the first had him in Hero territory from the start; his walk in the ninth kept him there.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Kris Bryant (-.225).  He was headed for the Goats going into his at-bat in the ninth, and his broken-bat flyout to short center cemented his place at the top.
  • Goat - Anthony Rizzo (-.211).  Even though his sacrifice fly scored a run, the fact that it caused the second out of the inning hurt him more than the run helped him by a large margin.
  • Kid - Ben Zobrist (-.167).  Ended up on the final step with his game-ending grounder to short right. As for Hector Rondon, you may be asking?  The only thing that kept him from the podium was the fact that the Cubs were already trailing 1-0 when he gave up his homer.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 36: Lester moves back into the front of the pack while Bryant becomes the third player to hit double-digit negative territory.
