Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 37

If you've ever wondered about the potential existence of extraterrestrial life, the Loch Ness Monster, and other mythical creatures, Tuesday's game was proof that anything is possible.

Okay, so this normally isn't all that uncommon. And hopefully this year it will get to be much more common.

Okay, kids, grab your binoculars and prepare to look deep into the horizon...

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Miguel Montero (.027).  The first sign that anything in the world is possible: Montero ends up winning the Superhero on Tuesday night as a result of a stolen base. Yes, this is the same Miguel Montero that has a total of four stolen bases in his entire major-league career. But wait... there's more!
  • Hero - Trevor Cahill (.023).  Well, after a brief intermission, that is. You had to figure that Cahill would be in the top three on the night. Pitching two-plus scoreless while also escaping a jam, all while your team is being no-hit at the time... yeah, that'll normally make the top WPAs of the night. And now, back to the show...
  • Sidekick (tie) - Ben Zobrist and Tommy La Stella (-.009).  Yes, folks, it's the golden unicorn of the Heroes and Goats world: The almost-impossible-to-believe-that-you're-seeing-it two-way tie for the Anti-Hero. It's like a beam of blinding light shone down on the podium spot and brought this wonderful creation, never seen before and unsure of when it will ever be seen again. Treasure this moment, folks, because this is truly one-of-a-kind.

THE THREE GOATS: Well, after the majestic performances seen on the Hero podium, the Goats are... pretty much run-of-the-mill.

  • Billy Goat - Dexter Fowler (-.107).  There weren't many times when the Cubs had a runner in scoring position, and one of the times that they did -- the aforementioned Miguel Montero on second as a result of a stolen base -- Fowler struck out to end the inning.
  • Goat - Kyle Hendricks (-.092).  The first two times through the lineup seemed like a relative breeze. The third time... well... notsomuch.
  • Kid - Javier Baez (-.080).  Also had a chance with a runner in scoring position but couldn't get him home, either.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 37: Montero pulls to the front of the peloton while Fowler takes a precarious step toward double-digit-negative territory.
