The Tennessee Smokies were shut out by the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 5-0.

Starter Brad Markey took the loss after he allowed five runs in seven innings, but only two of the five runs were earned. Markey allowed six hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Whatever offense the Smokies had came from left fielder Mark Zagunis, who was 4 for 4 with a double. The Smokies had 7 hits total on the night.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans split a doubleheader with the Winston-Salem Dash (White Sox), losing the first game 9-5 and winning the nightcap 2-0.

In game one, Zach Hedges didn't make it out of the second inning when he allowed seven runs on seven hits over 1.2 innings. Two of the runs were unearned, Hedges walked two and struck out two.

After falling behind 2-0 after half an inning, Yasiel Balaguert gave the Pelicans the lead with a grand slam in the bottom of the first. It was Balaguert's sixth home run this season. Balaguert was 1 for 4.

DH Daniel Lockhart was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Center fielder Rashad Crawford was 3 for 4. Crawford led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored on the Balaguert slam. He also stole one base.

Right fielder Jeffrey Baez was 2 for 4 and scored a run.

In game two, Trevor Clifton held the Dash in check for 5.1 innings, allowing just three hits and one walk. Clifton struck out seven as he got his second win of the season.

Jose Rosario got his fourth save after pitching the final 1.2 innings, giving up one hit and one walk. Rosario struck out three, two of which came with runners on second and third and one out in the sixth inning.

Lockhart followed up his 3 for 3 game one with a solo home run in the second inning. It was his first home run this season. Lockhart was 1 for 3.

Crawford also had two good games today, He hit two doubles in a 2 for 3 performance in game two. Crawford scored once.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs comeback fell short and they were submerged by the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 5-4.

Justin Steele took the loss after he allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits over six innings. What stood out in this game, however, is that Steele struck out ten batters in those six innings. He did walk four though.

South Bend entered the top of the ninth trailing by two runs when Donnie Dewees led off the inning and ended up on third after a single and an error on the right fielder. Eloy Jimenez scored Dewees on a ground out but then Eddy Martinez popped out to make it two on, no outs and the Cubs down a run. But then Jesse Hodges got to second base on the second error of the inning by Loons right fielder Ariel Sandoval and reached third on a wild pitch. But then Matt Rose grounded out to end the game.

Jimenez was 4 for 5 tonight and scored once in addition to the RBI in the ninth. Jimenez also stole a base.

Dewees was 1 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored.
