Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Miguel Montero (.310). What a weird series it was for him. First he steals a base for only the fourth time in his career, then he hits a triple for the first time in four years. Almost makes you wonder what's next.
- Hero - Ben Zobrist (.066). Did his absolute best to set the table in the eighth with his double.
- Sidekick - Justin Grimm (.023). Yeah, it was that kind of a game... two-thirds of an inning and leaving after giving up a single took the bottom step of the Heroes. It's not always pretty, folks.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Jason Heyward (-.200). And then there's this side of things. Not-So-Fun Fact: Heyward is now at minus-25 for the season on the charts. It took until the 100th game in 2014 and the 115th game in 2015 for anyone to reach that number. The worst any player was after 39 games in 2015 was Chris Coghlan, who bottomed out at minus-19 after 37 games. And believe it or not, no one was worse than minus-11 -- with that honor going to Carlos Villanueva -- in the first 39 games of 2014.
- Goat - Jason Hammel (-.188). Eventually his homer-per-flyball percentage was going to go up. Apparently this was the game where it was going to start.
- Kid - Jorge Soler (-.145). A 3-0 count in the eighth, two out, two in scoring position... and a big, big whiff.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 39: Montero continues his climb up the charts with his rare antics while Heyward slips further into no-man's-land at the bottom.
