Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Addison Russell (.431). The double off of Bryce Harper's glove in the seventh was obviously pivotal, but he doesn't make the top step without his run-scoring single in the sixth and his walk in the fifth.
- Hero - Ryan Kalish (.316). It's all about location, and hitting a flare just out of the reach of Danny Espinosa at short will work just fine when it gives the Cubs the lead.
- Sidekick - Anthony Rizzo (.156). Gets the table-setter spot with his ground-rule double in the seventh.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Travis Wood (-.184). Only faced one batter and gave up a triple in a 5-4 game.
- Goat - Spencer Patton (-.167). I'm pretty sure that giving up a walk, a stolen base, and a double while retiring nobody wasn't the way that he wanted to make his Cubs' debut.
- Kid - Jason Hammel (-.161). Only had one inning where he wasn't fighting his way out of runners in scoring position, with his final inning of work pushing him to the final stair for the day.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 29: Russell works his way closer to the starting line while Rizzo moves into a tie for first on the charts.
