I'll have a draft recap at noon CT Monday. I will note that Oklahoma State, with two Cubs draft picks on their pitching staff, made the College World Series today. So you'll be able to watch them pitch next weekend in Omaha and hopefully beyond. I can't believe I'm writing this, but "Go Cowboys."
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were stopped by the Round Rock Express (Rangers), 10-7.
Starter Drew Rucinski allowed five runs on six hits over just 4.2 innings. Rucinski struck out four and walked one.
Carl Edwards Jr. entered the game in the top of the eighth inning with the score tied 7-7. He got the loss when he gave up three runs in the inning, including a two-run home run to Delino DeShields. Edwards allowed two hits in his inning of work. He didn't walk anyone but he did hit a batter while striking out one.
Center fielder John Andreoli gave the I-Cubs a 1-0 lead when he led off the bottom of the first inning with his seventh home run of the year. Andreoli was 2 for 3 with two walks. He scored twice.
First baseman Dan Vogelbach connected for a two-run home run in the bottom of the third, his tenth "vogelbomb" of the season. Vogelbach was 3 for 4 with a walk and he scored twice.
Right fielder Mark Zagunis was 2 for 4 with a walk and a run scored. Catcher Willson Contreras extended his hitting streak to 18 games with an RBI triple in the seventh inning. Contreras was 1 for 4 with a walk.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies uncovered the Chattanooga Lookouts (Twins), 5-4.
Starter Paul Blackburn got his fourth win after pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked only one.
Juan Paniagua got the two-inning save. He allowed just one hit, a solo home run in the top of the eighth. Paniagua walked one and struck out one.
Catcher Victor Caratini gave the Smokies a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning with an RBI triple. He then scored an insurance run on a Kelly Dugan sacrifice fly. Caratini went 3 for 4 and scored twice.
Third baseman David Bote was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Second baseman Daniel Lockhart was 2 for 4 with a double.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans got scratched by the Lynchburg Hillcats (Indians), 3-2.
Trevor Clifton pitched the first five innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked three.
Dillon Maples took the loss in relief. Maples only pitched a third of an inning and allowed a run on a single, two walks and a hit batter. At least the one batter he retired was a strikeout.
Yesterday Gioskar Amaya hit his second home run of the year. Today, he hit his third and his fourth home runs of the season, doubling his season total and provided the Pelicans with both their runs. Amaya hit the first one in the fifth inning and his second in the eighth to tie the score at 2-2. Amaya went 2 for 3.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs were left breathing fumes by the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays), 6-0.
Carson Sands started this game and allowed three runs on three hits over just two innings. He walked three and struck out two.
The Cubs failed to get a baserunner off Hot Rods' starter Michael Velasquez until P.J. Higgins singled with one out in the seventh inning. Higgins also singled in the ninth inning and went 2 for 4. Those were South Bend's only two hits.
