Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs split a doubleheader with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Brewers), losing the first game 6-5 and winning the second game 15-5.
Michael Wagner started game one and allowed two runs on five hits over just 2.2 innings. Wagner walked three and struck out three. He loaded the bases in both the second and third innings before exiting.
Felix Pena had a rough night and took the loss. Pena allowed four runs on six hits in just 1.1 innings. He struck out two and walked one batter intentionally.
Catcher Willson Contreras was 2 for 4 with a double, extending his hit streak to 19 games. He drove in one run and scored once. Right fielder Mark Zagunis was 2 for 3 with a walk and a line-drive double off pitcher Austin Ross' leg. Ross had to leave the game after that. Zagunis scored once.
In game two, Pierce Johnson came of the DL and won his first game of the season. Johnson allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out two.
The I-Cubs scored three runs in the top of the first and nine runs in the second to take an early 12-0 lead. They were powered by four home runs, including two from center fielder John Andreoli. Andreoli led off the top of the first with his eighth home run of the season and one inning later, connected for a three-run blast. Andreoli was 3 for 4 with a walk. He scored four runs and drove the four runs in.
Later in the first inning, first baseman Dan Vogelbach hit a two-run home run, his 11th this season. Vogelbach was 1 for 1 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch in game two. He scored twice.
In game one, third baseman Jeimer Candelario was hit on the leg with a pitch, which left him down on the ground for several minutes. He eventually ended up staying in the game and even played game two. In game two, Candelario hit a three-run home run as part of that nine-run second inning. It was Candelarios' first Triple-A home run ever and his fifth of the year. Candelario was 2 for 5 in game two.
Two batters later, catcher David Freitas connected for a two-run homer, the fifth and final I-Cubs blast of the game. It was Freitas' second Iowa home run and fourth overall. He was 1 for 4 with a walk.
One player who didn't hit a home run was shortstop Logan Watkins, and that's too bad because he would have hit for the cycle had he. Watkins went 4 for 5 with a double and a triple. Watkins scored twice and had one run batted in.
Right fielder Mark Zagunis went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He scored twice and had one run batted in.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies burned down the Chattanooga Lookouts (Twins), 4-1.
Jen-Ho Tseng started for the Smokies and he got his second win after allowing just one run on five hits over six innings. Tseng struck out two and walked one.
Jose Rosario got his first Double-A save and sixth of the season by pitching the final two innings without allowing a run. Rosario did not allow a hit, but he did walk one batter. Rosario struck out one.
The Smokies took the lead in the fifth inning with a two-run single by second baseman Chesny Young. Young was 3 for 4.
Center fielder Jacob Hannemann added on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh with his second home run in as many days. It was Hannemann's eighth home run this season. He was 1 for 4.
First baseman Cael Brockmeyer was 2 for 4 and he scored the fourth run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. Right fielder Bijan Rademacher was 2 for 4.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were locked out by the Frederick Keys (Orioles), 5-4.
Jeremy Null started and took the loss. He allowed five runs on nine hits over five innings. He struck out one and walked no one.
Second baseman Ian Happ was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Center fielder Rashad Crawford was 2 for 5 with a double. He scored once and had one RBI.
Right fielder Daniel Spingola went 2 for 4 and he scored once.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs used a seven-run sixth inning to slay the Dayton Dragons (Reds), 7-2.
Starter Adbert Alzolay allowed a two-run home run in the second inning, but those were the only runs he gave up over seven innings. Alzolay allowed just three hits and he didn't walk anyone. He struck out five.
Left fielder Eloy Jimenez went 3 for 5 with an RBI single and a run scored in the sixth. Second baseman Carlos Sepulveda doubled to lead off the sixth inning and later in the inning had a two-run single. He was 2 for 5 and scored after the double.
Catcher P.J. Higgins was 2 for 5 and scored once.
