Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 66

In another tight race for the top of the Heroes, it was Hector Rondon's four-out save that edged him to the Superhero award in Saturday night's 4-3 win.

It's always nice when you can get two-thirds of the podium in one photo.

The only thing left for Javy to do at this point is to stop bullets with his mind.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Hector Rondon (.237). It's the second time this season that Rondon has made it to the top of the Heroes this season after only making it there once in the past two years. And he got his first plate appearance ever in the big leagues as well, so there's that to boot.
  • Hero - David Ross (.226). Grandpappy almost made it to the top and probably will see a good amount of Cuyler voting in this one for a variety of reasons: His homer to put the Cubs back in front, his great squeeze bunt in the fourth, and his arm to get Andrew McCutchen at third on a stolen base attempt.
  • Sidekick - Kris Bryant (.064). He just missed a homer in the first but more than made up for it by destroying one onto Waveland in the fifth.

THE THREE GOATS: For the eighth time this season, Jon Lester causes a podium bump as his -.088 hitting is moved out. That bump brings his hitting to minus-10 on the season, with the Cubs' pitchers overall putting up a minus-19 with the bat.

  • Billy Goat - Javier Baez (-.121). Seriously, there's a major style point shortage going on right now. He did all kinds of things right out there on Saturday including two great plays in the field and another Matrix act at second base to avoid a tag, but his 6-4-3 in the seventh with the bases loaded proved to be his downfall.
  • Goat - Albert Almora Jr. (-.085). This was another game that I only saw in condensed format and I honestly wasn't even aware that he was in the game until I saw his groundout in the eighth.
  • Kid - Addison Russell (-.049). Between him and Baez, there was all kinds of leather being flashed on the left side of the infield. Unfortunately it didn't transfer over to the bat on Saturday, though.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 66: Rondon moves into a tie for seventh on the charts, making seven of the top 10 spots now occupied by Cubs' pitching.
