Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 51

New, 11 comments

Jon Lester goes the distance for the second time as a Cub and cruises to the top spot on the Hero podium in Wednesday's 2-1 victory.

I'd be pretty pumped too after that kind of a night.

I think Jason Hammel summed it up quite nicely:

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jon Lester (.603). Just how good of a WPA performance was Lester's on Wednesday night? The last time a Cubs' starter had a WPA above .600 in a game was September 15, 2015, and that was also from Lester in his other complete game as a Cub.  Prior to that you have to go back to Jeff Samardzija on July 23, 2012.
  • Hero - Kris Bryant (.133). After his strikeout swinging in the first -- the fourth consecutive game in which he's done so, all with at least one runner on -- I was thinking: "Man, he's gonna end up on the Goats again."  Thankfully his bomb to center in the third erased that thought.
  • Sidekick - Dexter Fowler (.060). Plus bonus style points for getting on the podium while not getting a hit on the night.

THE THREE GOATS: As has been the case for most of Lester's starts this season, there's a bump on the Goat podium as his -.069 hitting is moved out.  It's the seventh time this season he's caused a podium bump, six from the Goats.  The next closest pitcher for podium bumps is currently Jason Hammel with five (two Hero, three Goat).

  • Billy Goat - Ben Zobrist (-.081). Some regression to the mean was inevitable.
  • Goat - Addison Russell (-.063). Had one decent chance for a hit on Wednesday night but hit it right at Kike Hernandez at second base.
  • Kid (tie) - David Ross and Anthony Rizzo (-.058). The same can not be said for Ross, as he whiffed three times in three plate appearances. As for Rizzo, his tie for the final podium spot came thanks to him being caught stealing after his only hit of the night.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 51: Lester keeps pace at the top of the chart while a logjam begins to form near the bottom.
