Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 52

New, 15 comments

In the battle of two superb performances on Thursday afternoon, the 2-for-4 day from Javier Baez, which included driving in three of the Cubs' first four runs, edged just ahead for the top step of the Heroes in the Cubs' 7-2 win.

He hits! He fields! He slices! He dices! Look at that tomato!

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Javier Baez (.259). While it doesn't count toward his WPA, he definitely gets a whole bunch of style points for his great plays on defense in this game.
  • Hero - Kyle Hendricks (.232). I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Even if a pitcher has a great outing but still ends up on a lower step of the podium, the outing itself is still awesome.
  • Sidekick - Jorge Soler (.079). After all of the hard-hit balls he's had this year, it's a multi-hopper single to second that got him the final step in this one.

THE THREE GOATS: For the 24th time this season and the 18th time on the Goats, there's a bump as the -.034 hitting from Hendricks is moved out.  It's only the second bump of the season that he has caused.

  • Billy Goat - Addison Russell (-.071). Held out of the hit column along with Miguel Montero, but the main difference is that one of Miguel's outs drove in a run.
  • Goat - Kris Bryant (-.040). It's his first at-bat in the game that keeps killing him. He's now had seven straight games where his first at-bat came with runners on base and seven straight games that he's made an out in that at-bat. And unfortunately, majestic homers off of the video board in left that pad four-run leads can't compensate for it. But they're still wonderful things to watch.
  • Kid - Tommy La Stella (-.001). Gets the truly tough-luck podium spot for his pinch-hit strikeout in the eighth.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 52: Baez finds himself within two points of even ground on the chart while Bryant and Russell continue slugging it out for a chart position just outside of the cellar door.
