Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 72

While the bullpen was busy shutting the door on the final four innings of the game, it was two big hits from Willson Contreras that sent him to the top of the Heroes in Friday's 5-4 win.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Willson Contreras (.359). How's this for a hot start: He's holding on to a 1.415 OPS in his first seven games in the bigs.
  • Hero - Travis Wood (.288). For the first time in the history of this feature, Wood is a member of the plus-10 club.
  • Sidekick - Hector Rondon (.220). Get a four-out save; win a prize. It's like a carnival game.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Javier Baez (-.168). Okay, before I get labeled a Baez hater because he's at the top of the Goat list, let me reiterate that it's not my subjective opinion that's putting him here.  His catch into the stands in the fourth was a thing of beauty and the style point bank is once again empty as a result of it. If there was a way to give him something more than style points for it, I would, but I am just a mere servant of the WPA masters and in the end it would just make the next guy on the podium look worse anyway. So while the WPA overlords love to see nice plays in the field, they're unfortunately too obstinate to assign any credit to them and prefer to nitpick over 5-4-3 double plays and bases-loaded strikeouts. The complaint line starts over there.
  • Goat - Kyle Hendricks (-.093). The inning line that you hate to hear: four runs, one hit. Even worse when it gives up a four-run lead and brings the game back to a tie.
  • Kid - Albert Almora Jr. (-.084). Had a couple of missed opportunities of his own with runners in scoring position but one of them was masked by a 4-0 lead.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 72: Contreras continues his early ascent of the chart while Wood enjoys a view that he's never seen before.
