Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 74

Although the flood gates opened one inning later, it was the rough seventh inning for Travis Wood combined with one big error behind him that sent him to the top of the Goats in Sunday's 6-1 loss.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Not much from this game on the Cubs' Twitter account other than guys without shirts dressed up in lots of face paint. And I'm not going there.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES: For the first time this season, there's a bump on the Hero podium as John Lackey's .013 hitting is moved out, leading to a frantic race for the final podium spot.

  • Superhero - Wait... am I reading this right? Could it possibly be true? This isn't a joke of some sort? After 74 games, it's finally Jason Heyward (.089)!! I'm-- uh... I don't even know what to say. I'm feeling a bit emotional... talk amongst yourselves.
  • Hero - Justin Grimm (.028). The single that he gave up in the eighth did end up coming around to score thanks to Gerardo Concepcion, but the jam that he inherited and subsequently escaped in the seventh was good enough for second place on Sunday.
  • Sidekick - Jason Hammel (.024). A matter of inches and he probably would have ended up one position higher on the chart.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Travis Wood (-.113). Well, the view from the plus-10 club didn't last very long.
  • Goat - Willson Contreras (-.104). His doom came from the stolen base attempt after his walk in the fourth.
  • Kid - Miguel Montero (-.085). That swinging bunt of his in the seventh didn't really work out all that well.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 74: Hammel picks up a little ground in third place while Heyward enjoys the view that he's been waiting to see all season.
