Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 77

On a day when the bullpen desperately needed a breather, Kyle Hendricks did his part to help out by throwing a career high number of pitches to take his fifth Superhero of the season.

The bullpen has a very large "Thank You" card on its way.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Kyle Hendricks (.146). As Al mentioned in his recap, the 117 pitches thrown by Hendricks was a career high, breaking his previous mark of 108 on May 21, 2015.
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.122). If you only have one hit on the day, might as well make it a three-run inside-the-parker.
  • Sidekick - Kris Bryant (.067). Hard to believe, but true: This game is only the second one this season in which Team Bryzzo has been on the Hero podium in the same game, with the only other time being in the series opener on Monday.

THE THREE GOATS: It's an extremely tough-luck crew on the Goat podium in this game, magnified by a domino-effect bump from Hendricks' -.021 hitting being moved out, which in turn led to the .000 hitting of Carl Edwards Jr. being moved out.

  • Billy Goat - Justin Grimm (-.011). It's a new high-water mark (or closest-to-zero mark, if you prefer) for the Billy Goat this season, breaking the previous mark of -.017 which had been set by Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant on April 13 and April 24.
  • Goat - Matt Szczur (-.005). Even a walk, a passed ball, and a wild pitch couldn't help him out as the score was already at least 8-2 when they occurred. And then there's the toughest luck of them all...
  • Kid - Albert Almora Jr. (+.010). Yup, 1-for-3 with an opposite-field homer -- the first homer of his major-league career, no less -- and he ends up as the new largest Anti-Goat for 2016, smashing the previous mark of +.002 set by Justin Grimm on June 17. Sometimes life just isn't fair.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 77: Hendricks moves back into fifth place on the chart as the starting rotation once again occupies four of the top five spots.
