Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
THE THREE HEROES: In a season where unlikely occurrences keep occurring, it seems only fitting that for the second day in a row there's a three-way bump on the Hero podium as Jake Arrieta's hitting WPA of .089 led the team. That's only the fifth time in the past three seasons in which a pitcher has led the team in WPA thanks to his bat.
- Superhero - Travis Wood (.063). And by the thinnest of margins, Wood edges out...
- Hero - Trevor Cahill (.062). ...for the top spot courtesy of the controversial no-call check-swing walk to Paul Goldschmidt that got Joe Maddon ejected.
- Sidekick - Javier Baez (.057). Cut the deficit back to one with his homer in the sixth, but that's where the scoring ended.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Dexter Fowler (-.167). Registered a trifecta of sorts with three groundouts to third. At least his final at-bat was a flyout.
- Goat - Addison Russell (-.125). He's been in a WPA nosedive for the past 14 games. In that span, he's been on the podium eight times, all of them Goats and all of them either on the top step or the second one, taking his plus/minus position from plus-1 to minus-19. Ouch.
- Kid - Kris Bryant (-.118). Ended up on the final spot in large part due to his strikeout in the eighth with Ben Zobrist on first.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 55: Wood makes another move toward the front of the second pack, while Russell begins a desperate search for a rope to get himself out of the quicksand.
