Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Ben Zobrist (.336). You can't ask for much more table-setting than what he delivered Thursday night, giving the Cubs two runners in scoring position with nobody out in the ninth.
- Hero - John Lackey (.223). Cruised through the first four innings and fought his way out of a couple of big jams in the fifth and the sixth.
- Sidekick - Miguel Montero (.115). He gets the junior table-setter award for his pinch-hit walk to start the ninth.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Joel Peralta (-.341). Two batters faced, one walk, one single through the middle. And one impending sense of doom.
- Goat - Pedro Strop (-.240). It's safe to say that a lot of this podium spot is due to events that he didn't control, namely the error that occurred behind him made by...
- Kid - Javier Baez (-.229). ...but I guess this is karma's way of evening the scales. That and a popout to end the game with the bases loaded.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 78: Lackey breaks the tie with Montero for sixth place, moving the starting rotation into five of the top six spots on the chart.
