Before today's game with the Rangers to start the second half, the Cubs activated pitcher Clayton Richard from the 15-day disabled list and catcher David Ross off of the 7-day concussion DL. To make room for these two on the roster, pitcher Trevor Cahill was placed on the DL with patellar tendonitis in his right knee and infielder Munenori Kawasaki was sent down to Iowa earlier in the week.
Richard had made four rehab starts before his return to Chicago, two in Tennessee and two in Iowa. He went on the DL on June 21.
Cahill was 1-3 this year with a 3.07 ERA in 33 relief appearances this season. He has struck out 46 batters in 41 innings.
