Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 1

The month of July starts with big wins for Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and Eugene.

Tim Federowicz cleared waivers and has reported to Iowa.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were shut out by the Round Rock Express (Rangers), 3-0. It was the first time this season Iowa was shut out.

Rob Zastryzny didn't pitch poorly, but he got saddled with the loss nonetheless. Zastryzny pitched six innings and allowed three runs on five hits. (A quality start!) He struck out seven and walked two.

Iowa only managed three hits in this game. Mark Zagunis was 1 for 4 with a double.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies clouded over the Jacksonville Suns (Marlins), 5-3.

Smokies pitchers allowed 13 hits tonight, but only three runs as the Suns went 3 for 16 with runners in scoring position. Paul Blackburn started and got the win, giving up just two runs on eight hits over six innings. Blackburn struck out six and walked no one.

James Farris pitched the final two innings for his ninth save this season and first ever in Double-A. Farris gave up two hits and a walk, but no runs. He struck out one.

Center fielder Jacob Hannemann got on base the hard way, going 1 for 3 with a double and he was hit by a pitch twice. Hannemann doubled in Trey Martin in the seventh inning and then later scored when Billy McKinney beat out a potential double play running down to first base.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans filibustered the Potomac Nationals, 8-1.

Erick Leal became the first Cubs minor leaguer to reach ten wins this season. He gave up four hits over five scoreless innings. Leal struck out seven and walked no one.

Right fielder Jeffrey Baez connected for his third home run this season with the bases empty in the eighth inning. Baez was 2 for 4.

DH Rashad Crawford went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and one run driven in. First baseman Yasiel Balaguert went 2 for 4 with one run scored.

Left fielder Daniel Spingola went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI single. He also scored once. Second baseman David Bote went 2 for 4 with one RBI.

Shortstop Gleyber Torres was 2 for 4 with a double. He scored one run and had one RBI.

Highlights:

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs lost to the Lansing Lugnuts (Blue Jays), 3-2.

Starter Casey Bloomquist took the loss after giving up three runs in five innings. Bloomquist surrendered nine hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Center fielder Donnie Dewees was 2 for 3 and he scored a run. Third baseman Jesse Hodges was 2 for 4.

Eugene Emeralds

The Eugene Emeralds capped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants), 7-4.

Jose Paulino had a strong outing tonight and got his first win of the season. Paulino allowed just one run on four hits over six innings. Most impressively, he struck out eight and walked nobody.

Jared Cheek got the final four outs for his second save. Cheek allowed one hit, but no runs. He struck out one and walked no one.

Left fielder Robert Garcia tied the game up 1-1 with a solo home run to lead off the third inning. It was his first homer of the year. Garcia finished the night 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI.

Center fielder D.J. Wilson hit his first professional home run with a man on in the fourth inning. Wilson went  1 for 3 with two walks and two runs scored.

DH Matt Rose was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. He had one RBI and he stole a base.

Catcher Taylor Davis went 2 for 3 in a rehab assignment.

The Ems are off to an 11-4 start to the season and already have a five-game lead in their division.
