Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 79

The quick recap of Friday's ugly 10-2 loss: Both podiums were won in landslides.

Hey, look! There goes another one!
Hey, look! There goes another one!
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

I only watched the condensed version of this game and even that was painful to watch. For those of you who sat through the whole thing live, including slogging through the rain delays... my hat is truly off to you.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Kris Bryant (.073). Talk about a dead-ringer podium spot... he scored the Cubs' first run courtesy of another long homer to left. And he did it while it was still only a 4-0 game.
  • Hero - Matt Szczur (.003). Just how bad was it for the offense in this game? Szczur takes the second spot on the podium thanks to a single to left with a runner on first. In a 10-1 game.
  • Sidekick (tie) - Trevor Cahill and Spencer Patton (.000). You could very easily say that Cahill should get the nod for throwing three scoreless innings to Patton's one, and you'd probably be right. But normally I don't break two-way ties with executive decision votes, and I'm pretty sure that one-half of a point isn't going to make a whole lot of difference for either of these guys in the long run (except for the Trevor Cahill fan club who will send me angry letters that he should currently be at plus-1 on the chart and not plus-0.5).

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Jason Hammel (-.368). Another dubious honor from this game, as Al covered most of them already in his recap:  Hammel's Game Score on Friday night was 5. It's the lowest Game Score that he's ever posted, breaking his previous low-water mark of 9 that he set on April 16, 2010.  At least there was a familiar face there when he did it.
  • Goat - Anthony Rizzo (-.046). Hard to believe, but he was the only 0-for-4 on the night, magnified by his strikeout with Bryant on second in the first inning.
  • Kid - Ben Zobrist (-.030). Two plate appearances, including a strikeout to start the game, and his night was done.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 79: Bryant continues his ascent to even ground while Hammel and Rizzo both take a step away from the top of the pack.
