Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 21

Only Eugene wins tonight.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs got buzzed by the Salt Lake Bees (Angels), 5-4.

Pierce Johnson started and took the loss. Johnson pitched four innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out three.

First baseman Jeimer Candelario went 2 for 4 with a double. He scored twice.

Second baseman Logan Watkins went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Catcher Tim Federowicz was 2 for 5 and scored once.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies lost to the Mississippi Braves, 5-3.

Great start for Jen-Ho Tseng tonight who allowed just one unearned run over six innings. Tseng surrendered six hits and issued two walks while striking out two.

David Berg took over for Tseng in the seventh and got hammered for four runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning. Berg walked one and struck out one.

Gioskar Amaya went 3 for 4. David Freitas was 2 for 4 with an RBI double in the sixth. He scored twice.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were rolled by the Wilmington Blue Rocks (Royals), 9-4.

Starter Jake Stinnett got the loss. Stinnett allowed seven runs, five earned, on nine hits over five innings. He did strike out six and walk no one on the positive size.

First baseman Yasiel Balaguert hit a two-run home run in the third inning, his 13th of the season. Balaguert was 1 for 4.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were stung by the Burlington Bees (Angels), 3-1.

South Bend wasted a great start by Preston Morrison, who tossed six scoreless innings. He scattered seven hits. Morrison struck out six and walked one.

Tyler Peitzmeier took the loss when he gave up three runs in the eighth. Peitzmeier allowed three runs on five hits over two innings. He walked two and struck out no one.

Second baseman Carlos Sepulveda singled and scored on a ground out in the ninth inning. He was 1 for 4.

Eugene Emeralds

The Eugene Emeralds topped the Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), 8-7.

Manuel Rondon pitched the first four innings tonight and surrendered three runs on five hits, although only one of the three runs was earned. Rondon walked three and struck out three.

Alex Santana pitched two scoreless innings and got the win. Santana allowed one hit and two walk and he did not record a strikeout.

Mark Malave had a rough bottom of the ninth, but he got out of a two-out jam with the bases-loaded to end the game. Malave allowed one run on a single and three walks in his one inning of work. He also struck out three.

Left fielder Kevonte Mitchell hit his second home run of the season with the bases empty in the fifth inning. Mitchell went 2 for 5 with a steal tonight. He scored two runs and drove in two.

Center fielder Connor Myers was 2 for 5 with an RBI double in the top of the first. Myers would also score that inning on a Mitchell single.

First baseman Jose Paniagua was 3 for 4 with a walk. He had one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Vimael Machin went 2 for 4 with a steal. He also scored one run.

Shortstop Zack Short went 2 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored. He also had one RBI. Catcher Sam Tidaback went 2 for 5 with an RBI double in the seventh inning
