The Gonzalez Mishap of Game 96: After fouling off five straight pitches -- and giving Ryan Braun plenty of wind sprints between first and second base in the process -- Jonathan Lucroy finally gets the best of John Lackey on the 12th pitch of his at-bat and belts a two-run shot off of the Club Goodwill sign in left-center to give the Brewers an early 2-0 lead. WPA impact: -.185.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Addison Russell (.073). Came pretty close to getting the top spot by default, as he was the only Cub to drive in a run, but he did get a bit of an unexpected challenge from...
- Hero - Adam Warren (.063). ...who had to clean up a mess inherited by Clayton Richard and just barely got out of it before he left a mess of his own for Mike Montgomery to try and clean up. Montgomery didn't have quite the same luck, giving up a three-run shot to Kirk Nieuwenhuis.
- Sidekick - Ben Zobrist (-.008). Perhaps this is the "Reverse Bryant Maneuver". Or the "Bryant Foil". Make an out in your first at-bat with a runner on; get two hits later, one of which occurs when the score is lopsided, but despite all that still find your way to the top three of the night as the Anti-Hero. I'm telling you, this is how karma and the WPA overlords work their magic to occasionally even the scales out.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Javier Baez (-.119). Two opportunities with runners in scoring position, including a big one with two on and one out in the seventh, and whiffed on both of them.
- Goat - Dexter Fowler (-.100). Well... we still missed you.
- Kid - John Lackey (-.095). Saved from the top step of the podium thanks to what ended up being a quality start. At least by the book definition of the metric.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 96: Russell continues his charge back to even ground while Lackey becomes the only member of the rotation to be in negative numbers.
