Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 97

New, comments

In the game's highest-leverage moment, Anthony Rizzo comes up huge with a three-run double to put the Cubs ahead and propel him to the top of the Heroes in Sunday's 6-5 win.

That's called "reaching out and getting it".

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 97: Absolutely no surprise here... with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and one out, Anthony Rizzo reaches down for a slider away and shoots it into right-center for a bases-clearing double, erasing a 4-2 deficit and putting the Cubs ahead by one. WPA impact: +.370.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Anthony Rizzo (.264). And that, my dear readers, is how you go from potential Billy Goat to instant Superhero in one swing of the bat.
  • Hero - Tommy La Stella (.229). I'm sure La Stella is more than okay with getting bumped from the top spot after posting a perfect 3-for-3 day of his own.
  • Sidekick - Ben Zobrist (.125). Gave the Cubs what turned out to be a lead-saving insurance run in the seventh, but he wouldn't have made it to the top three without his other run-scoring single in the sixth to put the Cubs on the board for the first time.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Willson Contreras (-.156). Once again, the ill-timed 6-4-3 rears its ugly head and sends another victim to the top of the heap.
  • Goat - Jon Lester (-.142). The fact that 13 batters came to the plate in two innings with only two scoring should be considered a massive win in and of itself.
  • Kid - Jason Heyward (-.093). Well, on the positive side, at least they weren't all groundouts.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 97: Rizzo becomes only the second Cub this season to break the plus-30 barrier, joining Lester as the other member of the plus-30 club.
