Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 98

New, comments

The White Sox got the walk-off celebration on Monday night, with Mike Montgomery's second subpar outing as a Cub sending him to the top of the Goats in the Cubs' 5-4 loss.

There was one small victory on Monday, though.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Gonzalez Mishap of Game 98: The single that ended the game, a comebacker up the middle from Tyler Saladino that scored J.B. Shuck and gave the White Sox the 5-4 win. WPA impact: -.303.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Javier Baez (.193). It was a well-rounded night for Baez: some table-setting, a homer to start the scoring for the Cubs, a nifty play in the field, and an almost-Houdini play at the plate that came up a bit short. Maybe that's the Javy Superfecta.
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.113). For the second day in a row he records his only hit of the game in the highest-leverage situation, this time tying it in the top of the ninth with a single on another shortened swing.
  • Sidekick - Willson Contreras (.035). Did some damage with -- and to -- his lumber on Monday night, ending up with the final spot on the podium with his single in the ninth.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Mike Montgomery (-.364). Well, this isn't quite Alex Hinshaw territory, but so far it hasn't been a whole lot better.
  • Goat - Jason Heyward (-.166). It wasn't a hitless night, but the missed opportunities more than swallowed up the double that he hit while the Cubs were down by one.
  • Kid - Addison Russell (-.137). Also a victim of missed chances, coming up empty twice with two on including a runner on third each time.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 98: Rizzo continues to extend his lead at the top while Heyward falls back once again into the minus-30 club.
