Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 100

On a night where offense looked like it would once again be hard to find, a booming home run by Javier Baez gave him the top honors on the Hero podium as the Cubs rolled to an 8-1 win.

It's gotta be a great feeling when you know that it's gone as soon as you hit it.

And the moment that put the icing on the cake...

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 100: With two out and Jason Heyward on first in the bottom of the seventh, Javier Baez crushes a 3-2 curveball deep into the left-center field bleachers to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead... on their second hit of the night. WPA impact: +.338.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Javier Baez (.303). I mean, he absolutely massacred that curveball. The reaction from Hawk on Comcast SportsNet was quite simple: "It is... 3-1."
  • Hero - Jason Hammel (.250). Another impressive July start for Hammel, pitching seven strong and only making one mistake. Luck would just have it that the mistake would be to Anthony Ranaudo.
  • Sidekick - Kris Bryant (.161). Tied the game back up with the Cubs' first hit of the night in the sixth inning.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Miguel Montero (-.079). Almost had a hit in the seventh -- which probably would have also pushed him off of the Goat podium entirely -- but was denied on a nice ranging play by Todd Frazier.
  • Goat - Addison Russell (-.070). I know, it doesn't seem right that he ends up on the Goats when he hits his first-ever grand slam in the big leagues. Had the score not been 4-1 in the eighth when he hit it, the WPA impact would have been a lot greater. And before the inevitable comment comes in... it's not my subjective opinion putting him here.
  • Kid - Ben Zobrist (-.048). The same can be said for Zobrist's run-scoring double in the eighth; it just was too little and too late to make up for the 0-for-3 that preceded it, including a grounder back to Ranaudo in the first with two on.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 100: Baez works his way back to within five points of breakeven on the chart, a position he hasn't seen in just over 40 games.
