Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 28

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were knocked down by the New Orleans Zephyrs (Marlins), 7-1.

Starter Trevor Cahill took the loss. He gave up three runs, two unearned, over 3.2 innings. He walked four and struck five.

Right fielder Mark Zagunis accounted for the only I-Cubs run with a solo home run in the fifth. It was his 10th home run this season and sixth with Iowa. He was 2 for 5.

Center fielder Albert Almora Jr. was 3 for 5 with two doubles.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were put out by the Chattanooga Lookouts (Twins), 4-3.

Michael Wagner pitched the first six innings and he surrendered three runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out two.

Nick Sarianides entered a tie game in the bottom of the ninth and gave up the winning run on three singles. He retired only one batter and that was on a sac bunt.

First baseman Victor Caratini was 2 for 3 with a walk. He scored two of the three Smokies runs.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were lost in the dryer by the Salem Red Sox, 8-2 in a game that ended in the eighth inning because of rain.

Starter Trevor Clifton kept the Red Sox off the board for five innings, but he allowed three runs in the sixth and took the loss. Clifton pitched six innings and gave up three runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked no one.

DH Daniel Spingola hit two doubles and scored a run. He was 3 for 4.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs shut out the Lake County Captains (Indians), 3-0.

Ryan Kellogg threw the first six innings and gave up just four hits. He struck out six and walked no one.

Dillon Maples pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save. Maples struck out one.

The Cubs took a one-run lead in the seventh inning when Eloy Jimenez tripled and Eddy Martinez singled him home. Jimenez was 1 for 4 and Martinez was 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.

Second baseman Carlos Sepulveda was 2 for 4 with a double.

Eugene Emeralds

The Eugene Emeralds were sacrificed to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants), 5-4.

Jesus Castillo had his worst start of the season, allowing four runs on six hits over just 3.1 innings. Castillo struck out four and walked two. It was his third loss of the season.

Third baseman Wladimir Galindo hit a solo home run in the eighth inning. It was his fifth of the season. Galindo was 1 for 4.

Second baseman Trent Giambrone went 2 for 4. He scored one run and drove one in.

AZL Cubs

Lost to the Diamondbacks, 2-1.
