Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 30

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were drenched by the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 6-4.

The second start of Jordan Pries didn't go quite as well as the first. He took the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits over just 3.2 innings. Pries walked four and struck out two.

Pierce Johnson was better than previously in relief tonight. He walked in a run when he relieved Pries, but then he retired the next seven batters he faced, four by strikeout.

Center fielder Albert Almora Jr. hit a two-run home run in the third inning and hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning. It was Almora's fourth home run. He was 1 for 4.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies were snuffed out by the Chattanooga Lookouts (Twins), 9-2.

Starting pitcher Zach Hedges allowed four runs over five innings, but the three runs that scored in the fifth inning were all unearned. Hedges gave up just four hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Jorge Soler got a hit tonight! He was 1 for 3 with a walk in his rehab start. Soler scored one run.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans clobbered the Salem Red Sox, 15-4.

Starter Jonathan Martinez was the beneficiary of this explosion, winning his ninth game this season after giving up two runs on five hits over six innings. Martinez struck out two and walked one.

Third baseman Jesse Hodges hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning, his first home run of the season. Hodges also had an RBI double in the fourth inning and four RBI overall. He was 3 for 5 and scored three times.

Center fielder Donnie Dewees went 4 for 5 with a double, a walk and a stolen base. Dewees scored twice and had two RBI.

Second baseman David Bote was 3 for 4 with a walk, a sac fly and two RBI. Bote scored once. Left fielder Charcer Burks was 2 for 5 with a steal and two runs scored.

First baseman Yasiel Balaguert continues to hit with two more doubles tonight in a 2 for 5 effort. He also walked once, scored once and drove in three runs.

Shortstop Bryant Flete was 2 for 6 with an RBI and three runs scored. Catcher Tyler Pearson was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. Pearson scored twice and had one RBI.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were dunked by the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 2-1.

Oscar De La Cruz made his South Bend debut by throwing 4.2 scoreless innings and striking out seven. De La Cruz gave up just two hits and walked just one batter.

Casey Bloomquist allowed a run in the sixth and a walkoff run in the bottom of the ninth to take the loss. Bloomquist gave up the two runs on three hits over 3.2 innings. He struck out one.

Eloy Jimenez stayed hot, going 3 for 4 with an RBI double in the seventh inning. Catcher Alberto Mineo was 2 for 4 and scored once.

Eugene Emeralds

The Eugene Emeralds were plucked by the Boise Hawks (Rockies), 5-3.

Pedro Silvero gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and took the loss. He gave up another one in the second inning and his final line was four runs on three hits over two innings. One of the runs was unearned. Silvero walked three and struck out three.

Catcher Marcus Mastrobuoni went 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Center fielder D.J. Wilson was 3 for 4. Right fielder Robert Garcia was 2 for 5 with two RBI.

AZL Cubs

Losing to the Angels 5-3 after five. I'll update later.
