Right-handed pitcher Craig Brooks was promoted to Myrtle Beach today. He had a 2-1 record with a 1.39 ERA over 32.1 innings of relief pitching in South Bend. He had also struck out 42 batters in that time.
Dexter Fowler will start his rehab assignment in South Bend on Friday.
The Cubs today announced that they have signed third-round pick Tom Hatch.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were grounded by the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Brewers), 11-7. No home runs tonight by either side, oddly enough.
Starter Jake Buchanan got the loss. He allowed eight runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. Buchanan walked three, hit two batters and struck out six.
Left fielder Matt Murton was 3 for 5 with a double and two runs scored. First baseman Dan Vogelbach went 3 for 4 with a walk. He scored twice and had two RBI.
Catcher Tim Federowicz was 2 for 5 with a double and one RBI. Second baseman Logan Watkins was 2 for 4. He knocked in two runs and scored once.
This game was delayed by 33 minutes because of rain.
Tennessee Smokies
Were trailing 9-8 in the top of the fifth inning when the rains came. The game was suspended and will be completed tomorrow.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning, but they still lost 13-9 to the Winston-Salem Dash (White Sox).
Trevor Clifton started and got the loss. He surrendered five runs, four earned, on five hits over four innings. He struck out six and walked four.
Craig Brooks got hammered for four runs and six hits in his 1.2 inning Myrtle Beach debut.
Shortstop Gleyber Torres hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to give Myrtle Beach an early lead. It was Torres' ninth home run this season. He was 4 for 6 with four RBI. He also stole a base.
First baseman Yasiel Balaguert hit a solo home run in the second inning, his 11th. Balaguert was 2 for 5.
Center fielder Rashad Crawford went 2 for 4 with two walks. He scored twice and had one RBI.
Left fielder Charcer Burks went 2 for 6 and scored once. Third baseman Jason Vosler went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. Vosler scored once.
Right fielder Jeffrey Baez went 2 for 4 with a walk and he scored once.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and dented the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 5-3. The SB Cubs are now 11-4 in the second half.
Casey Bloomquist started and got his sixth win. He allowed three runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings. Bloomquist struck out six and walked no one.
Dillon Maples faced three batters in the ninth inning and got three ground outs for his first save of the season.
South Bend banged out 16 hits tonight. DH Eloy Jimenez was 3 for 5 with a double, raising his batting average on the season to .337. Second baseman Carlos Sepulveda also went 3 for 5 with a double and he scored one run as well.
Shortstop Andruw Monasterio went 2 for 5 with a double and a triple in his South Bend debut. Monasterio had two runs batted in and one run scored.
Left fielder Donnie Dewees was 2 for 5 with a steal. Dewees scored two runs and drove one in.
Right fielder Eddy Martinez went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Martinez was also hit by a pitch. Third baseman Jesse Hodges went 2 for 5.
