Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 116

The bullpen goes kablooey for the second straight game, with Hector Rondon's implosion in his first game back after a 12-day layoff earning him top honors on the Goat podium in a landslide.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Gonzalez Mishap of Game 116: With two on and nobody out in the top of the eighth, Hector Rondon leaves a fastball way up in the zone, allowing Stephen Piscotty to promptly launch it deep into the left-center-field bleachers and giving the Cardinals a 4-3 lead.  WPA impact: -.456.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - John Lackey (.288 / .270). Well, the good news is that he was smiling in the postgame presser after leaving with a stiff shoulder. Let's hope it's nothing more serious than, as he put it, "an old thing."
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.242). Gave the right-field video board a knock with a homer in the eighth and had a couple of other successful run-scoring opportunities, thanks to...
  • Sidekick - Kris Bryant (.083). ...setting the table twice with a single and a triple. It's been a while since both Rizzo and Bryant were on the Hero podium at the same time; you have to go back to July 10 to find the last time that it happened.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Hector Rondon (-.735). It's the worst WPA thumping that he's taken in his career by a very long shot, smashing his previous worst of -.494 set back on June 23, 2014.
  • Goat - Ben Zobrist (-.085). Couldn't find the hit column on Sunday night, with his best chance being a hard grounder in the sixth that went right to Matt Carpenter at first.
  • Kid - Addison Russell (-.080). The BABIP overlords did not look down fondly upon him in this game, having a potential single snagged away from him on a nice diving stop by Jhonny Peralta and following it up with a deep fly to center that came up just short on the track in the sixth.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 116: Rizzo extends his lead at the top of the chart, putting himself three points clear of Jon Lester with his Sunday night performance.
