Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 120: It's the first two-way tie for the Ramirez. The first goes to Kris Bryant for the first of his two homers in the game, a two-run shot to left to increase the Cubs' lead to 4-0. The second goes to Spencer Patton who, after walking two batters including one with the bases loaded, gets Scooter Gennett to ground out to second to end the threat in the sixth with the Cubs still leading 7-5. (It almost makes you wonder if Patton walked the guys on purpose just to get the Ramirez. Or maybe not.) WPA impact: +.106.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Kris Bryant (.297). He becomes only the second player this season to have two 5-for-5 games. The other one, you ask? It's Yunel Escobar of the Angels, who had his 5-for-5 games on July 26 and August 17. Even more interesting, Escobar pulled off the feat three times in 2015.
- Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.115). Team Bryzzo was at it again, with Rizzo's two doubles getting him to the second step.
- Sidekick - Addison Russell (.079). Also made his early plate appearances count with two singles including a very long one all the way to the ivy in the third.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Jorge Soler (-.038). Got caught looking a couple of times in his 0-for-4 day.
- Goat - Jake Arrieta (-.012 / -.039). Yes, his hitting would put him on the top step. Feel free to put him there on your scorecards if you wish, but as I've said all along, I won't penalize pitchers for not hitting. At least not until the collective batting average for pitchers gets to be a number well higher than .131. Like at least 100 points higher.
- Kid - Javier Baez (-.011). He had the same 2-for-4 day that Russell had, except his two hits came in his last two at-bats instead of his first two. It's all about the timing.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 120: Rizzo closes the gap at the top to two points while Arrieta slips back a bit but still holds onto third place.
