Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 124

Jon Lester keeps cruising along, picking up his team-leading 13th Superhero of the season with another strong outing on Monday night in the Cubs' 5-1 win.

This is becoming a very familiar sight every five games.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 124: With one out in the top of the second, Addison Russell opens the scoring with his 18th homer of the season, this one to left-center as the Cubs take the early 1-0 lead.  WPA impact: +.121.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jon Lester (.194 / .135). Found himself facing runners in scoring position in four of his innings of work but got out of it each time, including one pickoff that ended in an embrace between second and third base.
  • Hero - Addison Russell (.116). Following up a little on Al's factoid in his recap: There have only been 12 shortstops since 1901 that have driven in 80 runs at the age of 22 or younger. The feat has been pulled off 17 times by those 12 shortstops, and three of those 17 occurrences have come this season or last (Russell and Carlos Correa this season, Xander Bogaerts in 2015).
  • Sidekick - Anthony Rizzo (.052). Managed to overcome the early 4-5-3 (yes, you read that right) double play by recording four hits in his final four plate appearances.

THE THREE GOATS: Another tough-luck Goat podium as most of the negative WPA for hitting belonged to Lester in this one; it's the 11th time this season that Lester's hitting has been in the bottom three for the game.

  • Billy Goat - David Ross (-.017). It wasn't the sixth-inning flyout with the bases loaded that did the most damage; turns out that a seemingly benign foulout in the fourth inning with a runner on first was all that it took to earn top Goat honors in this game. The podiums can be very fickle.
  • Goat - Ben Zobrist (-.015). Also didn't do much wrong in this one, with a leadoff popout in the second and a strikeout in the fourth with a runner on second leading to the second step...
  • Kid - Matt Szczur (-.002). ...and then there's the dreaded pinch-hit popout for the bottom step.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 124: Lester once again pulls ahead at the top of the chart, while Russell finds himself within two points of even ground after a long journey back from the minus-20 club earlier in the season.
