In case you didn’t hear, Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager broke up a no-hit bid by Matt Moore with two outs in the ninth inning. As he exited the game, Moore was heard telling Seager, "You’re embarrassing me in front of Buster Posey!"
- There was a trade yesterday that caused a lot more reaction than you might have thought by looking at the names involved: The Dodgers traded catcher A.J. Ellis to the Phillies for catcher Carlos Ruiz. A minor leaguer and a player to be named later were also involved.
- Ken Rosenthal explains why this "stunning" trade was made.
- David Schoenfield believes that the trade made a lot of sense for the Dodgers, despite the sad eyes in the Los Angeles clubhouse.
- Clayton Kershaw cried when he said goodbye to Ellis. He wasn’t the only Dodger to do so.
- The Phillies and their fans weren’t any happier to say goodbye to Ruiz.
- While Ellis leaves the Dodgers organization, Yasiel Puig is still a Dodger. An Oklahoma City Dodger, that is. According to Jon Heyman, Puig is likely to stay in OKC all year and not get recalled when the rosters expand. But the Dodgers also seem to be reluctant to trade Puig and they say that he’s done everything they’ve asked of him in OKC.
- Grant Brisbee lists some teams that should be interested in trading for Puig.
- There was one other small trade as the Braves sent outfielder Jeff Francoeur to the Marlins. The Rangers were involved in this deal somehow as well.
- Anyone living in Chicago probably already knows this, but maybe some of you haven’t heard that starting next season, the White Sox home park will be renamed Guaranteed Rate Field. I’ve got nothing that’s funnier than that. Maybe "Chia Pet Field"? Nah, that’s a better name.
- Over at South Side Sox, they hate the name but acknowledge they’ll probably eventually get used to it. Some also seem to think it’s a plot by Cubs fans, because everything is about the Cubs
- Craig Calcaterra uses the occasion to rank the names of all 30 ballparks. He’s not a fan of "Guaranteed Rate Field."
- Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes said he wouldn’t opt out of his contract at the end of the season. Although he later said he could change his mind.
- Grant Brisbee doesn’t think there’s much chance of Cespedes not opting out.
- Cespedes was called safe at third last night on a play where his spikes took Adam Wainwright’s glove right off his hand.
- Royals catcher Salvador Perez is from Venezuela, but that didn’t prepare him for the brutal Kansas City summers. Perez explains how he manages to survive catching day after day in extreme heat. Just look what Ichiro says about summer in Kansas City.
- Both Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and Orioles third baseman Manny Machado are scheduled to be free agents in two years. Eddie Matz thinks Machado might be the better bet.
- The Diamondbacks may be keeping pitcher Shelby Miller another week in the minors so they can delay his free agency.
- Staying on the chaos in Arizona, Jay Jaffe looks at how the Diamondbacks got in such a bad place.
- Ryan Davis looks at the future of the Cardinals outfield after Matt Holliday.
- The Rangers called up Carlos Gomez and he homered in his first at-bat.
- MLB and the Players Association announced a $5 million investment in Puerto Rico.
- Joseph Swide asks why Little League baseball makes it so difficult for teams from Africa to compete?
- The Hartford Yard Goats are the newest team in the Eastern League. But they’ve been playing on the road all season because their new stadium isn’t completed and now it may never get built. The Eastern League may be leaving Hartford after never getting there in the first place.
- Ken Rosenthal weighs in on the "Zach Britton for Cy Young" debate and explains why he’s firmly in the "no way" camp.
- Nina Mandell has an interview with ESPN’s Jessica Mendoza on her first season in the "Sunday Night Baseball" booth.
- Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez has been historically great at Marlins Park so far in his career.
- The Brewers have been pretty good at home lately too.
- Teams that have had the same linescore in three consecutive games.
- The spirit of the Montreal Expos lives on in Youppi!
- It seems every week we have a new candidate for "Catch of the Year." Last night, Royals outfielder Jarrod Dyson made a fantastic play, robbing Christian Yelich of a home run. It was the first time anyone had ever robbed a home run at Marlins Park.
- And finally, Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor slid hard into Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis. Kipnis, aware of what happened between Odor and Jose Bautista earlier this year, slowly backed away after the play. Eventually, Odor realized that Kipnis was just messing with him and laughed.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster.
