Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 106

Strong pitching ruled the day once again on Tuesday as Jason Hammel's six innings of shutout ball took him to the top of the Hero podium in the Cubs' 3-2 win.

A note to all of the readers out there: Heroes and Goats will be going on another short hiatus for the next few days as I will be heading to Indianapolis later today for the gaming spectacle known as Gen Con 2016.  I've always been an avid gamer, and hopefully the next four days will be as fun and exciting -- if not completely overwhelming -- as I'm expecting that they will be. The next installment of Heroes and Goats will be on Monday morning, August 8, recapping the final game of the series against the Marlins and the three upcoming games against the Athletics.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 106: With one out in the top of the eighth, Hector Rondon catches Dee Gordon one step too far from first base and picks him off on a bang-bang play. WPA impact: +.099.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jason Hammel (.310 / .269). As you can see, I've included a "split line" for starting pitchers where the second number represents their WPA with hitting included. As for Hammel's night on the mound, once he got out of the bases-loaded jam in the first it was pretty smooth sailing for the next five innings.
  • Hero - Dexter Fowler (.183). Got the Cubs started off on the right foot with his leadoff triple, then tacked on a couple more hits to make sure the second podium spot was his.
  • Sidekick - Aroldis Chapman (.155). Sealed the deal with a couple of very nice defensive plays behind him. That and a 103-mile-per-hour strikeout.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Pedro Strop (-.190). His two-thirds of an inning of work was much more exciting than it needed to be, including a single on a sawed-off bat, a single that deflected off of him, and a ball thrown away on what was likely to be a 1-4-3 double play.
  • Goat - Ben Zobrist (-.103). The final two spots go to the two 0-for-4's on the night, with Zobrist leading the charge thanks to his 6-4-3 and bases-loaded strikeout...
  • Kid - Javier Baez (-.073). ...and Baez taking the final spot with his three strikeouts with runners on. But he still had more slick plays with the glove at third, so it wasn't all bad.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 106: Hammel does his best to keep pace with the rest of the rotation, finding himself two points shy of becoming the fourth member to join the plus-20 club.
