Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 131: With one out and one on in the bottom of the first, Anthony Rizzo hits one off of the ribbon board in right field for his 26th homer of the season, giving the Cubs an early 2-0 lead. WPA impact: +.177.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Kyle Hendricks (.313 / .297). One more stat to go along with the ones that Al mentioned in his recap: In Hendricks' 14 outings at Wrigley Field this year, he has allowed a total of 15 runs. Included in those 14 outings are five starts where he didn't allow a run and four more where he only allowed one.
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.157). He had been dormant from the podiums for a while, at least for him; this is his first Hero appearance in seven games and his first podium appearance in six. Everyone needs a break every once in a while.
  • Sidekick - Carl Edwards Jr. (.039). And with not much else happening with the bats on Tuesday night, Edwards' scoreless eighth inning was good enough for the final spot.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Jason Heyward (-.044). Had a couple of hard shots toward first base plus a missed chance in the third with runners on the corners that ended in a flyout to center.
  • Goat - Kris Bryant (-.021). Ah, yes... the "Bryant Maneuver" returns. Miss in the first plate appearance and then watch as the game expands to 3-0 before the next plate appearance. I'll have to find a way to figure this out for sure, but my gut tells me that he has to be the player on the Cubs who has the average WPA closest to zero in all of his Goat appearances.
  • Kid - Matt Szczur (-.008). Then again, Szczur could give him a run for his money, as he's had a few tough-luck pinch-hit Goats in the past. This game wasn't one of them, though; it was just a 1-for-3 where none of the plate appearances had much of a chance to make a big impact.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 131: Hendricks makes his way into the plus-30 club for the first time this season, moving past Jake Arrieta for third place on the chart.
