Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 4

Iowa and Tennessee win. Pelicans take their sixth straight win.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs blew past the New Orleans Zephyrs (Marlins), 7-4.

Jordan Pries started and got the win. Pries allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits over five innings. Pries walked two and struck out two.

Armando Rivero pitched another two innings tonight without allowing a run. He's now gone 14 games and 19.2 innings without giving up an earned run.

Spencer Patton pitched the ninth inning and took home his ninth save. He walked the first two batters he faces, but then retired the next three in order, two by strikeout.

First baseman Taylor Davis hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. It was his second of the season. Davis also had an RBI double in a 2 for 3 game. He also walked one and scored twice.

Center fielder Albert Almora Jr. was 2 for 4 with a two-run double in the second-inning. He had three total RBI and also scored once.

Kristopher Negron was 2 for 3 with a sac fly. He scored once.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies usurped the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 5-1.

Zach Hedges was terrific tonight, tossing seven scoreless innings and getting first Double-A win. Hedges gave up four hits. He walked one and struck out four.

First baseman Ben Carhart went 2 for 2 with a double, two walks and a stolen base. Carhart scored one and drove inn one.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans filleted the Carolina Mudcats (Braves), 6-4. It was the sixth straight win for the Pelicans.

Preston Morrison got his first Carolina League win after allowing three runs, two earned, over seven innings. He gave up five hits, walked nobody and struck out seven.

Pedro Araujo had to come in and get the final out after Daniel Lewis gave up a walk and a single after two were out. Araujo got a fly out to center for his first Pelicans save and third overall.

Center fielder Jeffrey Baez was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple. Baez had two RBI.

Left fielder Charcer Burks went 2 for 3 with a double and a sacrifice fly. He scored once.

Catcher Erick Castillo was 2 for 4 and scored once. Shortstop Andrew Ely was 2 for 3 with a walk.

Highlights!

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were capped by the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 2-1.

Casey Bloomquist allowed two runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings to take the loss. Bloomquist struck out two and did not walk anyone.

Right fielder Connor Myers was 2 for 4 with a double. DH P.J. Higgins was 2 for 4.

Eugene Emeralds

The Eugene Emeralds were beaten by the Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), 8-4.

Bailey Clark started although he pitched only 2.2 innings. He surrendered two runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out five and walked no one.

Tyson Miller took the loss after he gave up two runs in 2.2 innings of relief. Miller gave up four hits. He struck out three and walked no one.

The Cubs 17th round pick this season, shortstop Zack Short, hit his first professional home run in the second inning with a man on. Short was 2 for 4 with three RBI.

Left fielder Kevonte Mitchell went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He also stole one base and scored once.

AZL Cubs

Beat the Padres, 4-3.
