Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 8

Iowa, South Bend and Eugene win.

Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

Congratulations to Eddy Martinez and Jose Paulino, who won the Cubs "official" Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month awards, respectively. Your choices for the same awards were Eloy Jimenez and Ryan McNeil.

Also, congratulations to Jeffrey Baez and Trevor Clifton, who were the Carolina League Player and Pitcher of the Week. You get awards like that when you win nine straight games.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs chased down the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 3-2.

Drew Rucinski got win number six after pitching six innings and giving up just one run on just two hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Corey Black pitched the ninth inning and got his 14th save and fifth with Iowa. Black allowed a one-out single and then walked the next batter to put two on with one out. But Black struck out the other three batters he faced.

Catcher Tim Federowicz had an RBI single in the first inning and an RBI double in the sixth. He was 2 for 3.

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. First baseman Taylor Davis was 2 for 3.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were served by the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 5-3.

Starter Brad Markey gave up four runs, all in the second inning, and got the loss. Markey gave up eight hits over five innings, and two of those four runs were unearned. Markey struck out three and walked no one.

First baseman Ben Carhart homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth. It was his second home run this season. Carhart went 1 for 4.

Shortstop Carlos Penalver was 3 for 4 with a run scored.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Take on Salem at home tomorrow night as they go for 10 straight.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs hunted down the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 3-1.

Jose Paulino got the win after allowing just one run on one hit, a solo home run to lead off the game, over seven innings. Paulino walked two and struck out seven.

Dillon Maples pitched the ninth and got the save. He gave up a single to lead off the inning, but he faced the minimum thanks to a game-ending double play. Maples did not strike anyone out.

First baseman Tyler Alamo was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored.

Eugene Emeralds

The Eugene Emeralds exiled the Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), 4-3.

Bryan Hudson started and surrendered just one run on three hits over five innings. Hudson walked three and struck out five.

Dakota Mekkes pitched the eighth and ninth innings and allowed two unearned runs in the top of the ninth when he picked up a bunt with two on and one out and he threw it down the right field line. But Mekkes got the win when the Emeralds walked off in the bottom of the ninth. The final line on Mekkes was two unearned runs on two hits in two innings. He struck out four and walked no one.

With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the ninth, catcher Sam Tidaback singled and DH Tyler Payne hit a walkoff double, scoring Tidaback. Tidaback was 1 for 4 with a walk and Payne was 1 for 3 with two walks.

Right fielder Robert Garcia was 3 for 5 with a double and a run scored. Second baseman Yeiler Peguero was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI. He scored once.
