Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 132

New, 20 comments

Jason Hammel gets himself back on track with a nice one-run outing over six innings on Wednesday to pick up his ninth Superhero of the season in the Cubs' 6-5 win.

The style points bank has once again been emptied. As has the one that's on the other side of town. And once they get the third one built, it'll be immediately emptied as well. #AbsolutelyRidiculous

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 132: After getting two quick strikes on Jordy Mercer in the top of the ninth with two out and two on, Aroldis Chapman wins an 11-pitch battle by striking out Mercer on a 92-mile-per-hour wipeout slider, putting the finishing touch on a somewhat nerve-wracking final inning and completing the sweep of the three-game series against the PiratesWPA impact: +.137.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jason Hammel (.244 / .215). There were a few occasions in this game where he was faced with a runner on third base, but he got out of most of the trouble with a key strikeout and some help from his friends on defense.
  • Hero - Kris Bryant (.161). Got the scoring started with his 36th homer of the season in the first and never looked back after that.
  • Sidekick - Jason Heyward (.137). He's had four two-hit games in his last five starts, which is wonderful, but there's definitely a fruit basket headed to Antonio Bastardo for his wild pitch and his balk in the sixth which gave Heyward almost half of his WPA on the night.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Travis Wood (-.120). His outing started out well enough with a strikeout in the eighth, but quickly unraveled after that with a walk sandwiched between two doubles to left.
  • Goat - Trevor Cahill (-.084). His outing started out well enough with a strikeout in the seventh -- wait, this sounds familiar -- but it quickly unraveled after that with a walk sandwiched between two singles to the left side.
  • Kid - Anthony Rizzo (-.061). You can't always drive 'em in... he had a pretty big chance with runners on the corners in the fifth but popped out to end the inning.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 132: Hammel moves back into the plus-20 club but still finds himself well back of the rest of the lead pack in fifth place.
