Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 145: With one on and one out in the top of the fifth, David Ross launches a two-run homer halfway up the berm in center field to extend the Cubs' lead to 3-0. WPA impact: +.190.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Jon Lester (.350 / .440). He's up to six straight Superheroes now and nine straight starts in which he's allowed two runs or less. That streak beats his previous record of eight in a row from June 12 through July 25, 2014.
- Hero - David Ross (.130). Not only did he have the very long homer, but he also threw out a couple of runners trying to steal second just for good measure.
- Sidekick - Jason Heyward (.035). And with his 2-for-3 day, the minus-50 club is closed. Hopefully for good. You're probably asking: "Wait, where's Anthony Rizzo??" He wasn't too far behind in fourth at .022, but his two early strikeouts kept him from reaching any higher.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Kris Bryant (-.049). It was probably a wash with the WPA (and perhaps the BABIP) overlords between his lineout double play in the seventh and his triple that got past a diving Randal Grichuk in the ninth. The 0-for-4 that preceded the triple was what landed him here.
- Goat - Dexter Fowler (-.039). His two late singles couldn't make up for his two early outs, and his lineout to left in the third with one on was just enough to nudge ahead of...
- Kid - Addison Russell (-.038). ...who was hitless on the day but had two early plate appearances with the bases empty. By the time he came to the plate with anyone on base, it was the sixth inning and the Cubs already had a 4-0 lead.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 145: The race at the top of the chart is turning into a breakaway as Lester opens up a 10½-point lead over Kyle Hendricks, with Rizzo sliding just behind Hendricks into third.
