Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 147

New, 7 comments

There was going to be a celebration one way or the other, but Miguel Montero made sure to make it a much more festive one with a walkoff homer to take top Hero honors in the Cubs' 5-4 win on Friday.

That's a good lookin' shirt.

They don't look like they're having any fun at all. Especially Chad Noble.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 147: On the third pitch in the bottom of the 10th, Miguel Montero walks it off on an opposite-field homer to complete the Cubs' comeback from down two runs in the ninth to a 5-4 win. WPA impact: +.369.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Miguel Montero (.345). What's not to love about a walkoff homer. Especially when it makes the celebration of clinching the division that much sweeter.
  • Hero - Munenori Kawasaki (.324). Singled and walked in this one, but earned his first-ever podium spot as a Cub the hard way: by taking a ball off of his foot to load the bases in the ninth for...
  • Sidekick - Addison Russell (.301). ... who got the final spot thanks to his hustle down the line on his game-tying single to second. Had he been out at first on that play, you'd have Chris Coghlan on this step courtesy of his 3-for-4 outing.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Javier Baez (-.267). Hitless on the day, including a comebacker to Carlos Torres to end the ninth with the bases loaded and a vicious denial by the BABIP overlords on a hard liner to third that was snagged by Hernan Perez.
  • Goat - Matt Szczur (-.261). Had a chance before Baez did in the ninth to win it, but just couldn't get the ball far enough out to center field.
  • Kid - John Lackey (-.236). Definitely battled in this one, not registering one 1-2-3 inning in seven frames and giving up three longballs including a monster blast by Ryan Braun.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 147: Montero leapfrogs over three players to get into seventh place on the chart, one point behind Lackey in sixth.
