Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
The Gonzalez Mishap of Game 148: With one on and nobody out in the top of the sixth, Jake Arrieta leaves a fastball up in the zone for Ryan Braun who smashes it into the seats in left-center to put the Brewers ahead for the first time in the game at 4-3. WPA impact: -.238.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Kris Bryant (.213). Got his run at the top spot going early with his triple to right-center and then added a walk and a plunking to it just to add some extra cushion.
- Hero - Javier Baez (.117). Got most of it from a hustle double to lead off the sixth and also added a walk, only his 15th so far this season in over 400 plate appearances.
- Sidekick - Trevor Cahill (.052). Once again the scoreless seventh inning is good enough to take the final spot.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Jake Arrieta (-.252 / -.271). It's not only walks that have been hurting him lately -- he's up to 73 walks allowed after Saturday's outing after only allowing 89 in the last two seasons combined -- but the wild pitch is also giving him fits as he leads the National League with 15.
- Goat - Carl Edwards Jr. (-.205). The second homer of the day to Braun was unfortunate, but even worse was the one that he gave up to Domingo Santana. That ball was smoked.
- Kid - Munenori Kawasaki (-.168). Such is the nature of the WPA overlords; they'll grant a player his first Hero podium appearance and then come right back and plant him on the Goats with a bases-loaded 6-4-3 and an inning-ending lineout to right with a runner on third.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 148: Arrieta once again loses his membership card to the plus-30 club, falling nine points out of the race for the top three spots.
