Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 150

New, 10 comments

After struggling to find any run production in the first six innings the Cubs finally broke through in the seventh, with Willson Contreras' bomb onto Waveland being all that he needed to pick up the Superhero in the Cubs' 5-2 win on Monday night.

Well, it's good that somebody does.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 150: With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Willson Contreras sends a Tim Adleman changeup onto Waveland Avenue for his 10th homer of the season, tying the game at 2-2. WPA impact: +.246.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Willson Contreras (.258). I'm pretty sure that Tucker Barnhart wishes he had that one to call over again based on his reaction in the video.
  • Hero - Dexter Fowler (.144). Similar to Contreras, he only had one hit in this game but definitely made it count as it gave the Cubs the lead in the seventh.
  • Sidekick - Hector Rondon (.117). It wasn't a perfect eighth, but it was a scoreless one and that's all that mattered. For those wondering about Addison Russell -- because you know you're out there -- his first two plate appearances that ended in a popout and a forceout, both with a runner on first, were what kept him from making the final step despite his 2-for-4 night with a monstrous homer to the back of the left-center-field bleachers in the seventh.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Kris Bryant (-.087). It hasn't been a good September so far for Bryant; he's hitting .194 with a .574 OPS this month which has coincided with his chart position falling from plus-3 back to minus-10.
  • Goat - Tommy La Stella (-.060). It's the dreaded pinch-hit Goat: he came into the game in the seventh with Chris Coghlan on second and proceeded to pop out to short.
  • Kid - Ben Zobrist (-.051). He had the early single, but the two missed opportunities in the fourth and sixth innings ended up taking it all back and landing him on the final step.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 150: The top of the chart stays quiet while the minus-10 club continues to get a little more crowded.
