Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 151: I do solemnly swear that everything that you will read in the Ramirez Catalyst for this game is the truth, as much as you may not believe any of it. With two out and one on in the bottom of the second, a ball is launched into the gap in right-center by... Jon Lester (!!) for his first career run-scoring double, scoring from first base... David Ross (!!!!) to give the Cubs an early 1-0 lead. WPA impact: +.125.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Jon Lester (.251 / .372). Everything about that double was fun to watch. Even the Reds' announcing crew had a fun time with it (one of the bonuses of being an MLB TV subscriber). Oh, and he also ran his streak of consecutive games allowing two runs or less to 10, which is one short of the team record in the last 100 years.
- Hero - Dexter Fowler (.101). Started the two-out scoring in the fourth with a single back up the middle, which was then followed by...
- Sidekick - Kris Bryant (.082). ...a bloop double to shallow right that brought home the second run of the inning. Even with two other hits on the night for Bryant, I'm thinking that there's still a fruit basket heading to Joey Votto for that play.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Addison Russell (-.057). Only had one opportunity that had much meaning to it in this game, that coming in the first with two on and two out, and struck out swinging to end the inning.
- Goat - David Ross (-.029). It's been six years since Ross scored from first on a double; the last time that it happened was on August 21, 2010. Against the Cubs, of course. What landed him on the negative side of the WPA fence was a groundout in the fourth with a runner on second, which was then followed by the four-run rally to break the game open.
- Kid - Javier Baez (-.020). It's a scenario that's played out several times this season; two times on base when the lead is wide preceded by two hitless plate appearances when the score is close.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 151: The door to the marquee plus-50 club has officially been opened as Lester takes his place among the H & G elite.
