Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 155

Jon Lester extended his consecutive Superhero streak to eight games with another strong six-plus inning outing on Sunday night as the Cubs won 3-1 in the regular-season home finale.

The old adage says that a picture is worth a thousand words; I think that figure might be a bit short in this case.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 155: With runners on first and second and nobody out in the top of the sixth, Matt Carpenter hits a check-swing grounder right to Javier Baez who goes around the horn for a 5-6-3 double playWPA impact: +.171.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jon Lester (.356 / .284). As Al mentioned in his recap, he's allowed one run or less in each of his last eight starts. He's also allowed two runs or less in each of his last 11.
  • Hero - David Ross (.134). What better way to finish your final regular-season home finale than with a blast into the seats in left-center. And that ovation that he got in the seventh... that was something really special.
  • Sidekick #1 (tie) - Aroldis Chapman (.069). He's struck out 40 batters in just under 24 innings of work since joining the Cubs. That's a 15.2 strikeout-per-nine-innings rate.
  • Sidekick #2 (tie) - Ben Zobrist (.069). All kinds of table-setting in this one, and you have to give an assist to CB Bucknor for deflecting Zobrist's first hit with his foot. Who knew that he was a hacky-sack player as well as an umpire?

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Anthony Rizzo (-.135). He's got a lot of work to do if he's planning on getting into the plus-40 club this season; in the past 16 games, he's only found his way to the Hero podium once. Just saving it up for the playoffs.
  • Goat - Javier Baez (-.053). Got on base in the eighth when he was hit by a pitch, but that was about it.
  • Kid - Jason Heyward (-.015). The night started off well with a single and a stolen base, but he couldn't capitalize on a couple of opportunities later in the game with runners on.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 155: Lester continues his breakaway from the rest of the field, with a regular-season first-place finish on the charts looking all but certain with seven games remaining.
