Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.
The Ramirez Catalyst of Game 156: With the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the fourth, Javier Baez hits a laser-beam grand slam down the left-field line to extend the Cubs' lead to 5-0. WPA impact: +.140.
THE THREE HEROES:
- Superhero - Kyle Hendricks (.201 / .196). Following in the footsteps on Jon Lester, Hendricks is now up to 10 straight starts in which he's allowed two runs or less.
- Hero - Javier Baez (.124). It's his first career six-RBI game and his second career grand slam; you might remember his first one from the 15-inning marathon against the Reds on June 28.
- Sidekick - Anthony Rizzo (.099). Got his two hits while the game was still close.
THE THREE GOATS:
- Billy Goat - Willson Contreras (-.047). It's been a while, but the 6-4-3 returns to send another victim to the top of the pile. That and a strikeout with a runner on second to end the third inning.
- Goat - Addison Russell (-.029). His plunking in the fourth couldn't offset his inning-ending foulout with two on in the first, and then nothing else after that made too much of a difference because the breakaway was in full swing.
- Kid - Kris Bryant (-.011). Leverage, schmeverage... he still has 39 homers and 101 runs batted in, making it the first time that the Cubs have had two 30-homer / 100-RBI players in the same season since Moises Alou and Aramis Ramirez did it in 2004. It's also only the seventh time in team history that the Cubs have had two 30 / 100 players in a season.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 156: Hendricks earns his first membership into the plus-40 club, opening up a 6½ point lead over Rizzo for second place on the chart.
