The Cubs announced today that reassigned nine pitchers to their minor league camp and gave reliever Maikel Cleto his outright release. These moves reduce the Cubs Spring Training roster to 50.
All nine players reassigned were pitchers. Four players on the 40-man roster were optioned to minor league teams. Right-handed pitchers Aaron Brooks and Jose Rosario, along with lefty Jack Leathersich, were optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitcher Duane Underwood Jr. was optioned to Double-A Tennessee.
Additionally, five non-roster invitees were reassigned to minor league camp. They are right-handers Seth Frankoff, Casey Kelly, Jhondaniel Medina and Conor Mullee. Left-hander Zac Rosscup was also sent to minor league camp.
None of these moves come as a surprise. None of these players were expected to make the Opening Day roster. However, nine of them will serve as minor-league depth for now.
