Today is MLB Draft day! It’s not all that exciting for the Cubs, as they will pick toward the end of the first round due to their great 2016 season.
Coverage of the draft begins at 5 p.m. CT on MLB Network with a preview show. The first round should begin about 6 p.m. CT, and you can also watch a live stream of the first and second rounds, as well as the two Competitive Balance rounds, on MLB.com.
The Cubs hold overall picks No. 27 (as compensation from the Cardinals for signing Dexter Fowler) and No. 30. Here’s some info on what dollar value is assigned to each slot in the first three rounds.
And just because the Cubs are picking that low doesn’t mean good players can’t be had. Recent players drafted at No. 27 or lower who have had good big league careers (year drafted): Aaron Judge (32nd overall, 2013), Lance McCullers (41st overall, 2012), Jackie Bradley Jr. (40th overall, 2011), Aaron Sanchez (34th overall, 2010).
Josh will have a preview of the draft, which will also be an open discussion thread, later this afternoon. Here are the rest of the details for Day 1.
