Wednesday, there was a post made on social media by Cubs shortstop Addison Russell wife’s Melisa that suggested the couple was having marital issues, including comments left by another individual on that post that alleged abuse.
According to Gordon Wittenmyer in the Sun-Times, Major League Baseball is going to investigate this matter:
Major League Baseball plans to investigate domestic violence allegations made against Cubs shortstop Addison Russell via social media Wednesday night, an MLB official said Thursday morning.
MLB is investigating based on the posts and is expected to try to interview both the wife and the friend under its 2-year-old domestic violence policy.
Any potential penalties are at the discretion of the commissioner’s office on a case-by-case basis under the policy.
A team official said the club is looking into the allegation but has no comment at this time.
I won’t make any further comment on this either. I’ll simply wait until MLB or the Cubs have further statements to make. According to this ESPN.com article, the social media post in question and the comment have since been deleted.
