Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 30

Schwarber hits two home runs in I-Cubs win. Two major leaguers rehab in Tennessee.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs beat the Round Rock Express (Rangers), 7-3.

Seth Frankoff pitched five innings and allowed three runs on four hits, two of which came on a second-inning home run. Frankoff struck out nine batters (!) and walked three.

The win went to Conor Mullee, who was perfect over the next three innings. Mullee struck out two.

DH Kyle Schwarber hit two solo home runs tonight, one in the first inning and one in the eighth. Schwarber was 2 for 4 and he also walked in the eighth inning with the bases loaded for his third RBI.

First baseman Chris Dominguez was 3 for 5 and scored once.

Catcher Ali Solis went 2 for 4 with a two-run single as part of a five-run eighth inning that gave Iowa the win.

Third baseman Chesny Young was 2 for 4 and scored once.

Second baseman Jemile Weeks was 2 for 5 with an RBI.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies accepted the surrender of the Jackson Generals (Diamondbacks), 5-2.

Brett Anderson started this game on a rehab assignment and allowed two runs on four hits over four innings. Both runs scored on a two-run home run by Stewart Ijames. Anderson walked two and struck out three.

The win went to James Pugliese because Anderson didn’t go five innings. Pugliese pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits. He walked one and struck out one.

Justin Hancock pitched a perfect top of the ninth inning for the save. He struck out two.

The Smokies took the lead on a three-run home run by first baseman Yasiel Balaguert in the third inning. It was his eighth home run this year. Balaguert went 1 for 4.

Charcer Burks had a pair of doubles in a 2 for 3 game. He also walked once and stole a base. Burks scored twice.

Catcher Ian Rice was 2 for 4.

Ben Zobrist played all nine innings tonight and played both left and right field. He was 1 for 3 with a walk and he scored once. He looks ready to return to the majors.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were taken to the woodshed by the Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers), 10-2.

Michael Rucker started and got the loss. Rucker was touched for six runs, five earned, on eight hits over five innings. Rucker walked one and struck out two.

First baseman Matt Rose was 2 for 4 with two doubles. He doubled home Eddy Martinez in the seventh inning and later scored on a ground out.

Martinez was a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were sabotaged by the Lansing Lugnuts (Blue Jays), 6-4.

Dylan Cease was terrific over his five innings. He gave up just three hits and no runs. Cease struck out six and walked one.

Tyler Peyton was not as terrific. Peyton pitched the other four innings and got the loss after he allowed six runs on eleven hits. Four of the runs were unearned. Peyton walked one and did not have a strikeout.

Shortstop Isaac Paredes went 2 for 4 with a double and one run scored.

Catcher Alberto Mineo was 2 for 3 with a walk and he scored once.

First baseman Vimael Machin went 2 for 5 with a double. He had one run batted in and one run scored.

Center fielder Roberto Caro was 2 for 4 with a double and he scored once.

Eugene Emeralds

The Eugene Emeralds stopped the Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), 2-1.

Starter Enrique De Los Rios allowed just one run on one hit over five innings. His problem was control, as he walked four and struck out two.

Yapson Gomez got the win in relief. Gomez surrendered just one hit over three scoreless innings of relief. Gomez struck out five and walked one.

Michael Knighton got the save and completed the two-hitter with a perfect ninth. He struck out one.

Left fielder Joe Martarano gave the Ems the lead with a sac fly in the seventh inning. He was 0 for 2 with a walk.

Third baseman Jhonny Bethencourt was 2 for 4.

AZL Cubs
