Hard to believe the minor league regular season ends three weeks from tonight.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs calmed the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 8-7.
Aaron Brooks had a rough start today, but he got the win anyways. Brooks allowed seven runs on 12 hits, including two home runs, over 5.1 innings. Brooks walked two and struck out two.
Pierce Johnson was perfect over the next 2.2 innings. Then Jack Leathersich pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save. Leathersich struck out one.
Shortstop Mike Freeman hit his first Cubs home run and his second of the season with the bases empty in the fifth inning. Freeman was 1 for 5 with two RBI.
In the sixth inning, catcher Taylor Davis hit a two-run home run, his second in two games and his fifth of the season. Davis also had an RBI double in the first inning. He was 2 for 5.
DH Jemile Weeks went 2 for 4 with two doubles and a walk. Weeks scored twice and stole one base.
Right fielder Bijan Rademacher went 3 for 4 with a walk and one run scored. Center fielder Jacob Hannemann was 2 for 5 with a double and he scored once.
Left fielder John Andreoli tripled with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Andreoli was 1 for 2 with a walk and one run scored. He was also hit by a pitch.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies split a doubleheader with the Biloxi Shuckers (Brewers), winning game one 4-1 and being no-hit in game two, 1-0.
In game one, Zach Hedges allowed just one run on a home run in the second inning and got the win. Hedges pitched six innings and gave up seven hits. He walked one (intentionally) and struck out two.
James Norwood pitched the seventh inning and got the save. His only baserunner allowed was a one-out single. Norwood struck out two.
Ian Rice broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run, his 16th of the season. Rice was 1 for 3.
Charcer Burks added an insurance run later in the seventh with an RBI double. He later scored the Smokies fourth and final run on a wild pitch. Burks was 3 for 4 with two RBI.
Center fielder Trey Martin was 2 for 3 and scored twice. Shortstop Carlos Penalver was 2 for 3.
In game two, Daury Torrez was the hard-luck loser, giving up a solo home run in the second inning for the only run of the game. Torrez allowed two hits over three innings. He struck out two and walked no one.
Four Shuckers pitchers combined for the seven-inning no-hitter in game two. It was the first no-hitter in Shuckers history.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans outpaced the Winston-Salem Dash (White Sox), 5-3.
Thomas Hatch started tonight and allowed just one run on two hits over five innings. Hatch struck out six and walked just two.
Relievers David Berg and Dakota Mekkes combined to retire the final 15 Dash batters in a row. The reliever before them, Jordan Minch, gave up a game-tying two-run home run in the seventh inning. He then walked the next two batters but got out of the jam with a double play. So the Pelicans relievers got 17 outs over the final 16 batters.
Berg threw three innings and struck out three. Mekkes pitched two innings, got the win and struck out two.
Shortstop Zack Short broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the top of the 12th inning. Another run scored on the play on an error by the left fielder. Short was 2 for 6 with a double and one run scored.
Right fielder Eddy Martinez was 2 for 5 with a double and one RBI. Catcher P.J. Higgins was 2 for 6 with one run batted in and one run scored.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs were crowned by the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 13-5.
Starter Matt Swarmer took the loss after he allowed seven runs over just four innings. Swarmer allowed eight hits, including a grand slam in the third inning. He walked three and struck out three.
Second baseman Yeiler Peguero was 2 for 2 with a walk and a sacrifice fly. Peguero had three RBI.
Right fielder Chris Pieters was 2 for 3 with a walk. He scored three times and all three times he was driven in by Peguero.
Third baseman Andruw Monasterio was 2 for 4 with a double and he scored two runs.
Eugene Emeralds
The Eugene Emeralds were beaten by the Spokane Indians (Rangers), 2-1.
Alex Lange started and allowed just one hit over three innings. He didn’t walk anyone and he struck out five.
After Lange, Jesus Camargo pitched five scoreless innings and also allowed just one hit. Camargo also didn’t walk anyone and he struck out five.
All that good pitching went to waste because the Ems didn’t hit and Brian Glowicki blew the save in the top of the ninth. Glowicki allowed two unearned runs on one hit and two walks. Glowicki struck out two.
Right fielder Brandon Hughes was 1 for 4 and scored the only Ems run in the fourth inning. He singled, stole second, went to third on a flyout and scored on a groundout.
